Gbagbo Reaffirms Opposition to Fourth Term as Cote divoire’s Political Tensions Intensify

Former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo has reiterated his firm opposition to a fourth presidential term for Alassane Ouattara, delivering a strongly worded speech on Thursday, during the New Year’s greetings ceremony of his party, the Party of African Peoples–Ivory Coast (PPA-CI).

In a solemn atmosphere, Gbagbo placed respect for the Constitution at the core of his political struggle ahead of the 2026 election, stressing that his stance against a fourth term is definitive and rooted in the need to preserve institutional integrity.

He recalled that even during periods of crisis and armed conflict under his leadership, constitutional order was never suspended, underscoring his call for strict adherence to democratic rules.

Beyond the constitutional debate, Gbagbo raised concerns about the growing number of political detainees in the country, warning that excessive repression risks fueling instability.

He urged his supporters to strengthen solidarity with prisoners and their families, while reaffirming human dignity as a central pillar of his political vision.

Earlier, senior party officials highlighted what they described as political exclusion and injustices faced in 2025, with local leaders, women, and youth representatives emphasizing discipline and grassroots consolidation.

Looking ahead, Gbagbo directed his party toward internal reorganization and preparation for its next congress, signaling his determination to remain a leading force in the Ivorian opposition despite ongoing political and legal challenges.
