Ghana and Nigeria have jointly condemned recent calls by some Ghanaians demanding the deportation of Nigerian nationals, warning that such actions could strain bilateral relations.
The Nigerian government responded by dispatching a fact-finding delegation to Ghana to investigate the situation, which has drawn significant attention from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized that the viral video fueling outrage in Ghana has been officially condemned by Nigerian authorities, and the individual responsible has apologized publicly to Ghanaian leadership and citizens.
Ablakwa urged calm, highlighting the large Ghanaian community in Nigeria—estimated at over 500,000 people—and the risks of reciprocal tensions. Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegu Ojukwu, downplayed media reports of widespread unrest, noting that no violent protests were observed during her visit.
She praised the cooperative relationship between Ghanaian President John Mahama and President Tinubu, assuring that the situation is being managed effectively.
Both governments have committed to ongoing stakeholder engagement to prevent similar incidents in the future and to maintain peace between the two countries.
