Ghana Secures 0% Tariff on Exports to China

Ghana has secured a groundbreaking 0% tariff concession on all its exports to China, following high-level bilateral talks between the country’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

Mr. Ablakwa, announcing the deal via social media, called it a major breakthrough with the potential to boost trade, drive industrialisation, and create jobs.

Under this new arrangement, Ghana—and other African nations—will benefit from duty-free access to the Chinese market for all goods.

China remains Ghana’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade surpassing $11 billion in 2024.

Talks held during the China-Africa Summit in Changsha also focused on future industrial collaborations.

These include plans to develop an integrated aluminium industry using Ghana’s bauxite reserves and the establishment of an electric vehicle manufacturing plant, leveraging the country’s lithium resources.

Both governments are expected to formalize these agreements under a new Economic Partnership Agreement to support trade, joint ventures, and technology transfer.
