Ghana has paid its final respects to the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash during a state funeral in Accra over the weekend, which gathered top government officials, military officers, and grieving families.
Among the dead were Defense Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice President Dr. Samuel Sarp-Donkor, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three Air Force personnel.
The remains, identified with the support of families, were displayed before burial as the nation observed three days of mourning.
In response to the tragedy, President John Dramani Mahama announced a commission of inquiry, with flight data and cockpit recorders already recovered.
While Chinese technical teams—manufacturers of the crashed Z-9 helicopter—are available under protocol, the government has also called on U.S. experts to ensure transparency and credibility in the investigation.
The move comes amid widespread shock over the crash, which occurred en route to an event in Obuasi and has left a deep impact on Ghana’s armed forces and political leadership.
