The Bank of Ghana has printed GH¢4.58 billion to support government expenditure, just months after President John Mahama publicly pledged that his administration would not resort to such measures.
The revelation, captured in Appendix 2A of the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, has triggered accusations of hypocrisy, as the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) had previously criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for similar practices.
Critics recall that in 2022, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, then-Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, accused the NPP of printing GH¢22.04 billion without parliamentary approval, a claim the central bank denied.
Observers argue that the development undermines confidence in government’s economic management and raises concerns over inflationary risks.
Political opponents and commentators on social media have accused the NDC of double standards, warning that continued reliance on central bank financing could further destabilise the economy.
