The governments of Ghana and Jamaica have signed a new bilateral agreement to facilitate the deployment of Ghanaian nurses and teachers to Jamaica.
The agreement, finalized during the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) summit in Brussels, marks a significant step in skilled labour mobility following Ghana’s earlier success with Barbados.
This structured partnership offers specialised visa pathways, international-standard remuneration, and streamlined recognition of professional qualifications for Ghanaian healthcare and education professionals.

The initiative addresses Jamaica’s demand for skilled workers while easing Ghana’s unemployment burden in the health and education sectors.
With Ghana producing around 55,000 nurses and over 20,000 teacher graduates annually, the local job market remains oversaturated.
In 2024 alone, over 10,000 nurses and midwives left the country, with only a fraction of teacher graduates employed by the public sector.
The agreement is expected to generate between $50–75 million annually in remittances and positions Jamaica as a strategic alternative to traditional migration destinations such as the UK and US.
