Mali Faces Escalating Humanitarian Crisis: Over 6.4 Million in Urgent Need of Aid

In Mali, the humanitarian situation has reached critical levels, with 6.4 million people—27.7% of the country’s population of 23.1 million—requiring emergency assistance.

Persistent insecurity, structural vulnerabilities, and the impacts of climate change have exacerbated the crisis, leaving millions in dire need of support.

Humanitarian organizations estimate that $771.3 million will be required in 2025 to meet the needs of 4.7 million people. However, funding has been consistently inadequate, with only 54% of requirements met in 2024.

This shortfall has heightened risks for the most vulnerable populations, including children and displaced families.

The crisis is reflected in alarming statistics. Approximately 2.3 million people are grappling with food insecurity, while 1.9 million lack access to safe drinking water, hygiene, and sanitation.

The situation is especially dire for children, with 2.2 million under the age of five facing acute malnutrition and 1.7 million deprived of education, further widening social divides and jeopardizing the future of an entire generation.

The northern and central regions of Mali are the hardest hit, bearing the brunt of armed conflict and mass displacement. These areas are plagued by severe access constraints and the deterioration of critical infrastructure, compounding the already dire humanitarian needs.
