Niger Teachers Begin 72-Hour Nationwide Strike Over Working Conditions

Teachers across Niger’s public primary and secondary schools have launched a new 72-hour strike, beginning Wednesday, May 21, 2025, to demand better living and working conditions.

Organized by the Dynamics of Education and Training Unions, the strike will run through Thursday and Friday, affecting classes, homework, mock exams, and sports activities nationwide.

The action will culminate in collective prayers on Friday, as stated in a notice sent to the ministries of education and training.

Key demands include enhanced security for teachers in conflict-affected regions, a favorable special salary scale for education staff, and the payment of allowances to contract and vocational training teachers.

This latest action follows a similar three-day strike held on May 14–16. According to Almoustapha Moussa Idé, secretary of the National Union of Education and Training Agents of Niger (Synafen), negotiations with government representatives—ongoing since May 8—are still in progress.
