Nigeria Calls for Equity in Distribution of ECOWAS Statutory Positions

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has emphasized the need for fairness and inclusiveness in the allocation of key statutory positions within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Speaking during an ad hoc ministerial meeting in Abuja on the rotation of statutory posts, she underscored the collective resolve of member states to uphold equity, regional balance, and institutional integrity in the bloc’s governance system.

She noted the importance of considering the aspirations of smaller member states that continue to contribute meaningfully to the regional integration process.

The committee, comprising representatives from Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo, has been tasked with reviewing proposals for the distribution of statutory positions for the 2026–2030 period.

These include leadership roles such as the ECOWAS President, Vice-President, Commissioners, Judges of the Community Court of Justice, and Directors General of WAHO and GIABA. ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray reaffirmed that the process aligns with the 2012 Supplementary Act governing position rotation, aimed at ensuring equitable representation of all member states across executive bodies.

The committee’s report is expected to be presented to the Council of Ministers for validation in December 2025.
