Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, will be laid to rest today, Tuesday, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
His remains are expected to arrive at noon from London, led by a delegation headed by Vice President Kashim Shettima. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will receive the body at the airport during a brief military ceremony before it is transported to Daura for funeral prayers and burial.
An inter-ministerial committee chaired by Secretary to the Federal Government, George Akume, has been established to coordinate the burial, alongside the Katsina State government and the late president’s family.
Twenty-five federal ministers have been assigned to attend the ceremonies in Daura, scheduled for Wednesday.
President Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning, with flags to fly at half-mast and Tuesday observed as a public holiday. Condolence books have been opened at federal institutions, Nigerian missions abroad, and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Centre in Abuja.
Tributes continue to pour in from global leaders for Buhari, a retired military officer and former military head of state (1984–1985), who was elected president in 2015 and served until 2023. He is remembered as a patriot, anti-corruption crusader, and respected pan-African figure.
