Nigerian Senior Army Commander Killed in ISWAP Attack on Borno Brigade Headquarters

Nigeria has suffered a major security setback after Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, commander of the 29th Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI, was killed in an attack by suspected ISWAP militants in Benisheikh on Thursday, April 9.

The assault on the brigade headquarters also left several soldiers dead and wounded, according to military and local reports.

The Islamic State West Africa Province—a Boko Haram faction linked to the Islamic State—reportedly used explosives and heavy gunfire during the raid before being repelled by troops.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters confirmed that operations are ongoing to track down fleeing insurgents, as the long-running insurgency in northeastern Nigeria continues to drive widespread instability across Borno State and surrounding areas.
