Senegal’s National Police have swiftly responded with arrests and weapons seizures in Saint-Louis Northwestern part of the country, following violent clashes amid the legislative election campaign.
Just 24 hours after the unrest on Monday, police detained four individuals on charges of assault and battery, who are now in custody at the Saint-Louis central police station.
In a subsequent operation at 1:30 am near Km50, units from the Brigade d’Intervention Polyvalente (BIP), supported by the Groupement Mobile d’Intervention (GMI), intercepted a caravan linked to a coalition of political parties.
The search uncovered a cache of weapons, including tear gas canisters, telescopic batons, shell casings, tasers, knives, slingshots, and other prohibited items.
Seventy-seven individuals, mainly bodyguards traveling in the caravan, were also detained, and seven vehicles containing the seized weapons were impounded.
Police are actively searching for additional suspects connected to the violence.
The National Police affirmed their commitment to public safety and securing the electoral process as Senegal approaches its November 17 legislative elections, underscoring their dedication to enforcing law and order during this critical period.
