Uganda Deploys Special Forces to South Sudan Amid Growing Fears of Civil War

Uganda has sent special forces to South Sudan as concerns mount over the country’s escalating tensions and the potential for renewed civil war.

Kampala’s military chief confirmed on Tuesday that troops had been deployed to “secure” Juba, South Sudan’s capital, as the fragile power-sharing arrangement between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar appears to be unraveling. Recent clashes have heightened fears of a broader conflict.

Ugandan military commander Muhoozi Kainerugaba stated on social media that special forces had entered Juba two days prior, emphasizing Uganda’s support for Kiir.

It remains unclear how long the Ugandan troops will remain in Juba or whether their deployment was requested by Kiir’s government.

In recent days, sporadic fighting has erupted across South Sudan, including in Nasir, where clashes between government forces and the White Army militia resulted in multiple casualties, including a general.
