WFP Warns of Aid Suspension in Northeast Nigeria Amid Funding Shortfall

The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent warning that it may be forced to suspend its operations in northeast Nigeria, particularly in conflict-hit Borno State, due to severe funding shortages.

The UN agency has already begun reducing aid to vulnerable communities, raising alarm over the dire consequences for millions facing food insecurity in a region grappling with violence, displacement, and climate shocks.

With nearly 5 million people at risk and 300,000 malnourished children depending on support, WFP says it requires $130 million to sustain its programs through 2025.

Without immediate funding, up to 150 nutrition centers could shut down.

On August 6, the agency renewed its appeal to donors, warning that a halt in operations would deepen the humanitarian crisis and leave families with devastating choices between hunger and displacement.
