The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), has arrested 48 individuals for drug-related offenses in a week-long operation, seizing significant quantities of illicit substances, including cannabis, hashish, and ecstasy.
Between February 14 and 20, DLEAG conducted 31 operations targeting drug trafficking and consumption across the country. Among those arrested were Gambian nationals as well as individuals from Sierra Leone, Senegal, Nigeria, and Guinea.
Authorities seized 18 bales and 36 packets of cannabis sativa, three blocks and 47 pieces of hashish, nine bags and 34 pieces of kush, and 1,007 ecstasy tablets. A Senegalese man was arrested at the Barra ferry terminal in possession of three blocks of hashish and 1,000 ecstasy tablets, while a Nigerian man was apprehended in Kotu for cultivating 26 cannabis plants, with additional quantities concealed in a plastic container.
During a raid at Dominos bar-restaurant near BB Hotel, law enforcement officers encountered resistance from individuals attempting to obstruct the operation.
Fifteen people were arrested for interfering with police work, with 13 of them formally charged and placed in custody.
In addition to these arrests, six new drug-related cases have been filed in the courts as authorities intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking in The Gambia.
