Gambia’s President Barrow Vows Accountability in Jammeh Asset Probe

Gambian President Adama Barrow has vowed full accountability for those involved in any misconduct surrounding the recovery of assets seized from former President Yahya Jammeh, following the release of official records that revealed large-scale sales and financial irregularities.

This statement came a day after an emergency Cabinet meeting convened on 13 May, prompted by newly released documents detailing significant transactions. These include the sale of state stakes in companies such as Gam Petroleum for 551.25 million dalasi and Comium Gambia Ltd for 5.75 million dalasi. The records also list real estate sales worth approximately 202.75 million dalasi, including properties in Kerr Serign and Brufut Gardens.

Notably, the documents feature both original and “revised” figures for several assets, raising concerns over transparency in the recovery process.

President Barrow assured citizens that all recovered wealth “belongs to the people” and that his administration “will not tolerate any negligence or misconduct” in managing national resources.

He also pledged to tighten oversight mechanisms and urged the public to remain calm and respect the rule of law as investigations continue. “We will learn from this and do better,” Barrow said, reinforcing his commitment to restoring public trust in the system.
