Ghana’s Former Vice President Bawumia Urges Mahama to Halt Mass Public Sector Dismissals

Ghana’s Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on President John Dramani Mahama to uphold his commitment to being a president for all by reversing recent mass dismissals in the public sector.

The new administration, through a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, has ordered the immediate revocation of appointments made by the previous government in its final days in office. This move has sparked widespread criticism, with Bawumia joining those opposing what he describes as unfair dismissals of legitimately employed citizens.

Writing on his Facebook page on Wednesday night, Bawumia stated that while he had intended to give the new government time to settle in, he could not remain silent as the rights of affected workers were being violated. He accused the Mahama administration of engaging in a targeted purge, contradicting its campaign promises of “jobs for all Ghanaians.”

“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them,” Bawumia wrote.

Critics argue that the dismissals unfairly penalize ordinary citizens for political transitions, while the government insists that the affected employments were made under questionable circumstances. The controversy adds to growing tensions over governance and job security in the country.
