Mokwa Flood Victims in Nigeria to Receive ₦8 Billion Relief and Infrastructure Aid

The Niger State Government has unveiled an ₦8 billion plan to aid victims and rebuild affected communities, In response to a catastrophic flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, North Central Nigeria, on 28–29 May 2025.

During a visit to a temporary camp at Tiffin Madza Primary School – currently housing hundreds of displaced persons – Governor Umaru Bago announced ₦1 billion in emergency relief funds and the delivery of 50 truckloads of assorted grains.

In a longer-term effort to prevent future isolation and boost regional infrastructure, Governor Bago also approved the Mokwa – Raba Road reconstruction project, including the construction of four new bridges, at a cost of ₦7 billion.

The government has directed the Ministry of Lands to issue a Certificate of Occupancy to the Federal Government for the development of permanent housing for displaced families. In the meantime, the camp will remain operational until the end of June, and financial assistance will be provided for rent support.

Governor Bago urged residents to stop building on waterways, warning that such practices worsen flooding. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to restoring stability, dignity, and hope for those affected.

According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the disaster has claimed 206 lives, injured 82, destroyed 458 homes, and submerged 180 hectares of farmland. Over 3,500 people are now displaced, with nearly 10,000 in urgent need of food, clean water, shelter, and medical care.

Authorities are calling for national and international assistance to address the humanitarian crisis and reduce the risk of future disasters.
